Summit County General Town Information

Summit County's Past and Present Summit County provides a wide variety of activities during all seasons for people of all ages. The County is known as "Colorado's Largest Playground" and consists of seven towns. These towns include Breckenridge, Frisco, Silverthorne, Dillon, Keystone, Montezuma, Green Mnt., and Heeney. Not only does Summit County cover a large area with many towns, but it also has the following ski areas: Breckenridge, Keystone, A-Basin, and Copper Mountain. The towns average an elevation of 9,000 ft., and the surrounding mountains average 13,500 ft. in height. Past... Breckenridge is the oldest of the Summit County towns, which was first settled in 1859 during the gold rush. Breckenridge offers a mixture of old saloons and modern day buildings. Breckenridge is also a ski area that covers Peaks 7 - 10 of the Ten Mile Range. Breckenridge's Peak 8 opened for skiing in 1961, and the town takes pride in being one of the largest historic districts in Colorado. Other towns began to arise in the 1870's. The original town of Dillon was established in the 1870's and was forced to relocate in the 1960's so the Dillon Dam could be built to supply water to Denver. Frisco was also settled in the 1870's and named after the mining town of San Francisco. Both Copper and Keystone were founded later in the 1800's. Copper was known as the "wildest spot in the County", and Keystone was given it's name by a group on men who had traveled from Pennsylvania, the "Keystone State", on a mining quest. Present... All the towns in Summit County offer a variety of scenery, and each town has it's own unique ambiance. Breckenridge and Keystone have a ski mountain right in town, which can offer ski-in ski-out accomidations. Frisco is centered between all surrounding ski areas offering convience to a variety of activities and skiing. If you prefer a more subdued atmosphere with less people and more countryside, you might enjoy staying in Montezuma, Heeney, or Green Mnt. Summit County also offers a variety of shopping ranging from art galleries in Breckenridge to outlet malls in Silverthorne. Whether it be summer or winter, Summit County will never leave you bored!
